Day 19: Blog a Day for the Month of May

Patience is waiting without attitude.  This thought came to me recently while I was helping an elderly couple at my job.  Two hours later, we had a color picked out, a sheen, what type of paint they wanted and a quantity.

See, I am not a very patient person by nature, but lately I have had several opportunities to be patient....to wait without attitude.  It has not been easy, but the lesson has surprisingly been one that I have somewhat embraced.  Now I know how these things go....first the lesson, then the test!  We will see how THAT goes!

Day 16: Blog a Day for the Month of May

There has been a lot going on in my life this past week and I have been neglecting my desire to write a blog each day this month.  Here are a few things from this past week:
~ Friends that are true friends are hard to come by and under-treasured.  I need to be thankful and treasure the real friendships I have by spending time with my friends.
~ My family is amazing.  For many reasons that I do not feel I want to share, I am grateful for my family!
~ Learning to juggle being the mom to a young adult (where/when to draw that faint line between "mom" and "friend") is not an easy task.  My children are 25 and nearly 21 and I am still learning this balance.  Love being their mom....at each step of this journey.
~ My hubby is more amazing now than he was the day I met him.  I need to let him know more often how very much I love and appreciate him.
~ I enjoy my job.  While it is sometimes hard and some days are better than others, for the most part...I love it!
~ Life isn't about the big things, the grand moments, the huge breakthroughs or the enormous accomplishments.  It is the little things that count.

So, while I have not been blogging each day this month, I have been pondering my life and have found that I am happy with my life.  The struggles, the challenges, the emotions, the ups and downs and the outright laughing moments of my life are what makes this journey called "life" so amazing.  I am thankful that the Lord has allowed me time to reflect on my life this past week and to see how truly blessed I am.

Day 9: Blog a Day for the Month of May

RESTORATION
As many of you may already know, my husband owns a VW restoration business.  Recently, I was thinking about the processes involved in restoring a car and the way that parallels with someone who has a restored live through the redemption work of Christ.

While repairing rust, Dale often has to cut out the damaged metal sections of the car and replace them.  This is something that requires time, patience and knowledge to allow the damaged section to be taken out and the new section to be put  into place.  This is similar to what God does in my life.  It often takes a while for me to get the clue that something about myself needs to change.  Then it takes the patience to work through removing the rusted and damaged areas and replace those areas with something from Him.

Trust me.....when Dale is doing a restoration on a car, there is a lot of grinding, sanding, filling, pushing and pulling that must take place in order for the old to be taken out and the new to take its place.  It is not easy! Likewise, when I feel prompted to make some changes within myself, it is hard work!  There is always a temptation to take shortcuts and hurry things along, but when I have watched Dale with a car restoration, I have learned that you can't take shortcuts.  They only become bigger problems down the road.

Once Dale gets all of the grinding, sanding, buffing, grit blasting, and welding completed, he then primes and paints the car.  When looking at the car, you do not see all of the hours of work, all of the late nights spent at the shop, all of the physical efforts it took to get the car looking like there was never any damage to begin with.  Only the one doing the restoration knows everything involved in getting the car back to beautiful!  But put the car on the car lift and Dale can show you some residue of the restoration.....minimal, yes, but there will always be some evidence that a repair, a replacement has taken place.  When God restores my soul, the evidence of a restoration is a life change....a different way that I handle myself, think about things or even treat others.  He restores and repairs me from the inside out.....but only if I let Him do the work and only if I do my part in the restoration.  God is not going to do this without a sacrifice on my part.....I must allow the restoration to take place.  In a sense, it is just me saying "yes" to the restoration work He is proposing.

When Dale tells others of the work it took to get the car back to "better than new" condition, they cannot fully understand the work it took.  While I can look at the car and appreciate the work done and Dale can explain the work in great detail to me, it is only when I get my hands in there and grind, pull, sand etc...that I really can get a grasp on what it takes to do a restoration.  I can share my life restoration stories, but I will never be able to fully convey to others what the Lord does within my heart.  The results of a soul restoration can only be fully comprehended by the one who goes through it.  The redemption and repairing power of Jesus is available to any who would say "yes" to the restoration.  Unlike a car, we must be a willing participant in the restoration work.

Day 7: A Blog a Day for the Month of May

Things I have learned from my cat:

1. Being a pest will only get you into trouble
2. Attention is nice to have, unless it is gained through whining
3. Eat treats first!
4. Scratching at the door will not get you into the room
5. Too much attention becomes annoying
6. Play hard, nap often and purr a lot
7. When cornered, I will not respond well
8. Sunbeams should always be taken advantage of and never taken for granted
9. When in trouble, try your best to look adorable
10. Always greet your loved ones as soon as they walk in the door

Day 6: Blog a Day for the Month of May

LOL!  So you get two blogs posted since I forgot to post yesterdays blog when I completed it!  Maybe I should have stated that it might be "Write a Blog a Day for the Month of May" not "Post a Blog a Day for the Month of May".  Oh well....carrying on!

Today's topic: accepting myself
Through the years I have come to understand myself a bit better.  I have always been a person not overly concerned with what others think about me and confident in who I am.  It has often been said by me that "I like me."  The goal here is not to sound conceited, and most certainly not to say, "I like me and you should like me too."  Rather, I would say to you, "You should like you."  You were formed in your mother's womb and you are beautifully and wonderfully made.  That is not conceit...that is truth!  We are each beautiful and unique in our own ways.

Please do not get the impression from my above statements that I am not self-conscious of a few things about myself. After all, I am human. For instance, I do not really like my smile.  On the other hand, my husband loves my smile and tries to get me to smile as much as her can because he says when I smile I am beautiful.  On another note, I am a very determined person.  When I do not keep my determination in check, it can border on bossy....something I don not like about myself and therefore strive to change.

There are many things about myself that I could find "wrong".   It is when I focus on the things that I find to be negative that I am focusing on the wrong things.  Instead, I redirect my thoughts to the truth that I am uniquely, beautifully and wonderfully made and I am a work in progress...and so are you!  Next time you find yourself thinking about all that is "wrong" with you, just embrace who you are.

I saw this video for the first time several months ago.  It is so powerful to see how women describe themselves to a sketch artist and then how others describe her.  The variations in the two sketches don't even look like the same person was described!  Hope you are inspired by this video as well.  (You may have to copy and paste to see it.)

Day 5: Blog a Day for the Month of May

Getting ready to go on a few day mini-vacation with a friend, so this will be a short blog today.

There are moments in life that take my breath away....in good ways and bad.  A brief moment in the care when I quickly swerve out of the way of another driver who wasn't paying attention and just about sideswiped me.  That moment when I watch with pride as my child stands up for something they believe in. A moment of shock as my cat runs across the room and leaps at me to pounce on my feet or leg.  That moment when I am sitting on one couch, my hubby sitting on the other and I realize that I would marry him again if he asked....and feeling blessed that he asked the first time.  Yes, little moments that take my breath away.

Day 4: Blog a Day for the Month of May 2014

A few days ago, a woman came into the store.  She had a cell phone with all the bells and whistles and wanted to show me a color she was wanting to match.  As she was finding the link to the Pinterest post that showed the color in a room, she received a call.  "Oh!  Gotta get this!"  She took the call, and began to walk around the store as she was chatting.  Meanwhile, another customer came in and since I was the only person working that evening and my first customer seemed to be occupied, I began to help the other customer.  She told me that she wanted to get a particular color chip that her sister had gotten from another one of our stores while she was on vacation last week. They saw the color on Pinterest as well, but she couldn't remember the color name. She searched through her cell phone to find the color name in a text mesage from her sister, and in realizing she didn't have it saved in her messages, so she sent another text to her sister to get the color number again. Meanwhile, the other gal was still chatting to the person on the other end of her cell phone about how she was missing her son's ball practice and how her mother was bugging her to go to lunch so they could talk.  Her next comment floored me. "I told her that I got her that phone so we can talk anytime...but Grandma won't text, you know. Oh well....that's life!!"

At this time, the second gal was not-so-patiently waiting for her sister to text her back with the color number she was interested in.  Then, my store phone rings.  I let the second customer know that I am the only employee on duty and that I need to get the phone.  She was fine with that since she was waiting for her "lame sister" to text her back.  I took the phone call, made the paint that the phone customer ordered and came back out front.  The first customer was still chatting on the phone and now proceeded to step outside for a minute.  The second customer kept checking her messages each time the phone chirped at her.....disappointed and commenting out-loud with a sign each time it wasn't her sister texting her back with the color number.  She had a question about paint qualities and sheen differences, so I went back over to give her the run down.  I asked her, " What room are you painting?"  Her cell phone buzzed and she answered it "Hello?" then turned to me and mouthed the word "livingroom".  Then she told the person on the phone, "I'm at the paint store waiting for Lisa to text me the color number.  She is taking FOREVER!!" (In reality it had been no longer than 5 minutes since she had texted her sister.) "Yep.  Yep.  Ok, honey.....ok....well, I gotta go, the lady here is trying to help me with something.  Call daddy.  No...I can't talk right now, call daddy!  No....ok...well, then text me and I'll let you know.  Gotta go." (I noticed she didn't say "goodbye" or "love you" or anything of the sort.)  She turned back to me and stated, "Sorry," and we proceeded with our conversation, interrupted by an occasional chirp of the cell phone as another text came in.  None of them were from her sister.

We went back to talking about paint quality and sheen and throughout the conversation, her phone was buzzing, ringing, beeping and chirping.  Each time it chirped, she would excitedly say, "Oh!!  Maybe this is her!!"  Each time it wasn't.  She explained to me that she had sent a few more text messages to her sister letting her know that she was in the paint store "right now" so that she "understands that I am WAITING." She had a few more questions, each one interrupted with a buzz a chirp or a ring and each of my answers stopped with a "oh...hang on!  Nope not her." or a "Opp....gotta take this one." followed by a quick "Hello?" or a tap and slide of the cell phone screen.  This went on for about 15 minutes.

The first customer came back into the store just as I was finishing up a phone call.  She was finishing up her cell conversation and snapped her fingers at me followed up with a "Um.....you can help me now."  She stated to the person on the phone, "Ok...well gotta go...this lady at the paint store is in a hurry!"  She turned to me in-between glancing at her chirping cell phone, "Ok. (glances down at her phone), "Ok, (glances at it again) I need a color chip. Can you help me find it? (glance...tap...slide)  I'm in a hurry."  I stated, "Sure.  Do you know the name of the color or do have a color number?"  Her phone chirped again, and she stated, "Hold on," as she put her hand up toward me like you do when you tell someone to stop.  With a tap and a swish of her finger on the cell phone screen, she stated out-loud to no one in particular, "Ugh!  I'm getting it now!" and then proceeded to text the person back.  She then stated (while still texting), "This color chip is for my sister.  She's been bugging me about it all day so I thought I'd come get it myself since I can't remember the name of the color.....something "cream".....texting, texting aaaaaaand....send!  I heard the second customer's cell phone chirp over by the color chip display and saw her tap and swipe her cell screen.  I asked the second customer, "Is it Interactive Cream?"  Both of the customer screamed, "Yes!"  Then turned and looked at one another and sure enough....they were each looking at her own sister!

I thought it was sad that two grown women would be so involved with their cell phones that they didn't even see one another in a small store front.  The first sister looked at the second one, "Didn't you get my text?" The second sister stated. "Yes, but I couldn't get the 14 year old off of the phone long enough for me to check my messages."  Someone's phone chirped and they both looked down at their cell screens.  I got the color chip for the sister who wanted it and the other sister headed out to her car....phone in hand, face down and texting someone back.  They both left without saying goodbye to one another.  Then again, maybe they didn't get the message.

This morning, I found this while browsing my FB page.  It was posted by another friend and it is so true.  It is scary to think about how our gadget are replacing conversation.  Ironic that I am conveying these thoughts through a blog, I know.  The point is, that there needs to be balance.  The link below is a poem about social networking and how it can take over and leave someone lonely and isolated from the real word.  Look up, indeed.  After all, you may get an opportunity to have a REAL chat with your own sister!

Day 3: Blog a Day for the Month of May 2014

Day 3 and a few days away from Mothers' Day.  Thought I might give a little suggestion about "what to get mom".

For me, Mothers' Day is about celebrating my mom and my mother-in-law.  In the past, I loved to send cards to my grandmas as well.  For me, there is just something special about giving and/or getting a card with a handwritten note inside.  I think of the time it took for my children to pick out that card; the one with just the right words to express things that they may not be able to say to me personally (for whatever reason).  Sometimes I get funny cards with a gentle stab at my "mothering" skills.  Other times, I receive one with pretty flowers covering the front of the card with sweet words and lots of handwritten hearts and smiley faces inside the card.  The best ones (for me) are the handmade ones with personalized crayon drawings of me holding a handful of flowers.....my eyes unaligned and one slightly bigger than the other, my hair a mess on top of my head and my (usually) unusually large feet peering out from under my pink dress.  This Mothers' Day, I will be giving cards to my mom and mother-in-law....maybe I should find some crayons and really bling that card up for them!  I know that they will love whatever we give....even if just a card, they will know the thought behind it and appreciate it and maybe, just maybe, they will recall what makes being a mother so special.

Day 2: Blog a Day for the Month of May 2014

Today I want to share the words to a song that has always inspired me.  I can recall listening to this song around the time of my sisters graduation from high school.  We would often listen to songs on the radio while washing dishes (our evening chore).  Not really sure why, but the song just inspires me.  Recently, my daughter and I have been carpooling (me to work...her to school) and I usually have Christian radio on in my car.  They have been doing a week-long fundraising effort and we wanted to hear something other than horns blaring and bells dinging as contributions came in over their phone lines.  Alyssa found this song on her phone and two days in a row now, we have been singing this song with all that is in us as we travel to work.  Hope it inspires you today in some way as well. :)

"We Are the Champions" By QUEEN
I've paid my dues
Time after time.
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime.
And bad mistakes ‒
I've made a few.
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face
But I've come through.

(And I need just go on and on, and on, and on)

We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world.

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it
I thank you all

But it's been no bed of roses,
No pleasure cruise.
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race
And I ain't gonna lose.

(And I need just go on and on, and on, and on)

We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world.

We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions.

Day 1: Blog a Day for the Month of May 2014

Well, it is that time of year when I start posting a different blog each day for the entire month of May....and I am 7 minutes late in making my first entry!  Life....it will do things like this to you!

It would be great to say that I have a direction, a plan, some sort of thought as to where this will begin and where it will end.  As of this moment...I have no clue where we will travel what I will share and who will be reading these entries.  Really, the only plan I have is to commit to blogging each day for this month.  So here goes....

Friendship.  A simple word with deep, deep meaning.  I have friends that I have known for over 20 years, some for a few months or so.  We all have different ways that we met, different reasons why we are friends and varied interests, to say the least.  Some of my friends are outgoing, some reserved, some are all about the bling, others want to be the wallflower.  There traits I have seen in my friends are:  happy, friendly, quite, loud, funny, shy, vivacious, kind, giving, generous, slightly diva, adventurous, loyal, trustworthy, and smart.  Many are overcomers of one thing or another in their lives.  They are: mothers, sisters, grandmothers and aunts.  Some are all of these to many people.  They are helpful, hardworking and full of fire!  Each has shared with me and I with them....moments of laughter, silliness, joy, sadness, anger, outrage, courage, faith, hope, and each one.....love.

If you are reading this blog and consider us to be friends, please know, I appreciate you.  Others have summed up friendship in the following ways:

“It's the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter.”
~ Marlene Dietrich

“Why did you do all this for me?' he asked. 'I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you.' 'You have been my friend,' replied Charlotte. 'That in itself is a tremendous thing.”
~  E>B White, Charlotte's Web

“We'll be Friends Forever, won't we, Pooh?' asked Piglet.
Even longer,' Pooh answered.”
~ A.A Milne, Winnie-the Pooh

“Tis a great confidence in a friend to tell him your faults; greater to tell him his.”

~ Benjamin Franklin

“How many slams in an old screen door? Depends how loud you shut it. How many slices in a bread? Depends how thin you cut it. How much good inside a day? Depends how good you live 'em. How much love inside a friend? Depends how much you give 'em.”
~ Shel Silverstien
